It takes far too long to log into the computers
Sometimes it can take ten or fifteen minutes to log into the computers around campus

Inappropriate?I am concerned that you have experienced such long log on times recently. Would you be able to provide more details on the locations where you found responsiveness to be poor so we can then perform some field tests on the PCs in question?
Late last year ICT Services became aware that users were finding that some PCs were slow to start up and log on, especially when first turned on in the morning. The Desktops Team worked on improving this behaviour, especially for older PCs, and as a result implemented a number of changes:
• Optimisation of security update checking and installation
• Rescheduling of anti-virus updates
• Optimisation of the anti-virus scanning configuration
• Reduction in the memory usage of Internet Explorer
The feedback I received following these changes was very positive; here are a few of the comments:
“Yes this was a problem and yes it does seem to have improved. Thank you!”
“Yes, my PC has been much better recently. Don't know what you've done but it has worked. It used to take ages to get on to the Internet, now it's brilliant.”
“It was the start-up times in lecture theatres that was a real pain - especially in the new lecture theatres in the Learning Landscapes area in the main building. But I have to say, over the past few weeks there's been a definite improvement.”
“Just to say that I think that PC performance has been significantly better lately.”
“Start up and login times seem to be satisfactory at present so thanks for the efforts of you and your team to improve these.”
ICT Services are currently working through a programme of hardware upgrades for many of the older PCs which will again improve their performance. -
I suspect some of the problems are specific to the computing labs. Lab A is obviously games and therefore not ICT's problem, but Lab B seems to run short on network capacity - some days it's fine, but on a busy day the login times are verging on unusable. -
Inappropriate?Thanks for your reply Leigh.
Nick has just beaten me to it, Lab B is normally where I encounter a problem - if we have an hour long lab session (and a tutor is only available for that period) it can be frustrating when we lose 10/15/20 minutes to logging into the system. Increasingly more students overcome this by bringing in their own laptops and plugging into the network but this is a very grey area and to be honest no student really seems to be sure if we're allowed to do this. -
Inappropriate? It's also worth mentioning that both Nick and I are computing students so we can really only speak for the computing department's computers. The only other computers I've used are the "hot computers" in the library which are really speedy to log on.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the replies. I did actually visit Lab B when this issue first came to light earlier this year. The PCs in Lab B are due an upgrade this summer (at least a memory upgrade) which should help improve performance - unless we have a bottleneck elsewhere. We will visit the lab again once the upgrades are complete to test out log on times.

this solves the problem

Inappropriate?I've just popped into Lab B this morning, and have to say for the first day of term it's abysmal. Of the nominal 60 available computers I'd guess no more than 30 are actually operational, and when I found one which was I clocked my login time (not including boot) at over 2 minutes - this with three people in the lab.
I've got a workshop in Lab B on Wednesday 30th - will it all be back in shape by then?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I understand there are big changes ahead in the Computing Labs. Brand new gaming PCs are to be installed in Lab A and the PCs from Lab A are to be moved into Lab B replacing the older slower PCs. This is why Lab B is currently only partially operational.
Faculty staff should have more details of the plans and when things will be up and running.
